In the past few days, I've talked about too many things with my friends and absorbed so much content that I can't seem to write anything. Even good things can't be consumed all at once; it can lead to indigestion.

The Tortoise and the Hare

I believe many people heard the story of the Tortoise and the Hare when they were young. It tells of a proud little rabbit and a persistent tortoise. At first, the rabbit runs very fast, and after creating a significant distance, the proud little rabbit feels confident of victory. It then finds a tree and takes a nice nap, thinking that even if it sleeps for a while, the tortoise won't catch up. However, the tortoise keeps climbing steadily, even though it is very tired and struggling. Finally, when the rabbit wakes up, it realizes it can no longer surpass the tortoise, and the tortoise ultimately wins the race.

In August 2018, the journal "Scientific Reports" published a study by American biologists. It was claimed that if we measure the lifetime activity of the tortoise and the hare, the tortoise, being a very enduring animal, would definitely win. Scientists stated that the distance the tortoise walks in its lifetime is greater than that of the rabbit.

But in real life, the tortoise might get too exhausted and die along the way, while the rabbit wakes up and finds it can't catch up, so it buys a four-wheeled sports car next door to speed ahead. It's also possible that the tortoise climbs for a long time only to find the finish line is in another direction. Regardless of whether the tortoise or the rabbit wins the race, there are also possibilities where the tortoise ends up as turtle jelly, and the rabbit becomes spicy rabbit heads.

There are too many uncertainties in our lives; no single method can guarantee you win the race. Even if you win this time, you might lose in the next race. Even if you lose this time, you can still win in the next race. Even if this project fails, you can start a new one.

Everyone's final outcome returns to dust; some die from illness, some from old age, and some might be hit by a car, with various ways to end the game. A momentary result is not important; what matters is being able to take action. Just like money, it only has value when it circulates.

People are the same; just thinking without acting is useless. Adjusting while doing is our normal way of life. Although many stories show authors moving forward with clear thoughts and organized plans, as you meet more people, you realize that no one clearly walks to this point; everyone grows through stumbling and falling. When you look back at yourself six months ago, don't you think that person was foolish? If not, then when I say it, you are foolish.

Balance

In the process of growth, many people work particularly hard, and I am no exception, often working overnight as if it were a daily routine.

Many times, we focus too much on the present, such as needing to launch a project tonight or writing an article to publish today, concentrating all our energy here. After completing it, I feel a tremendous sense of achievement. Look at me; I've worked so hard; how can you say I'm not diligent?

Focusing too much on results can lead to a problem. When the results do not meet our expectations, we instinctively resist this outcome, leading to our breakdown. We may start to sabotage ourselves, which is why when our results do not align with our expectations, the actions we take next often seem foolish. Ultimately, the bottle must shatter into irreparable pieces before we realize our foolish behavior. In the midst of this crazy foolishness, when others point out that our actions are illogical, we often respond, "No, I'm just..."

Then people might say, "Since that's the case, can we focus on the process?" If I just do the process well, then the results shouldn't be bad. This is essentially an excessive expectation of results. If I do the process well, will I definitely get good results? If I work hard every day in the fields, following my methods, I should definitely grow excellent crops. But there could be natural disasters, like locusts, leading to poor harvests.

Whether in process or results, we need to have predictions. For example, when I buy milk tea and tell the staff no sugar, I certainly expect it to be less sweet. When I want full sugar, my expectation might be that it will be very sweet, like the feeling of first love. Meeting expectations is what we can do. This is why many people emphasize data-driven approaches and rapid validation, as these are behaviors that align with expectations. After trying unsweetened milk tea once, I know what to expect next time.

However, many things are unpredictable. For instance, I don't know if this article will suddenly go viral. So for things we haven't experienced, we should have no expectations regarding the outcome, rather than expecting good results from a good process. For uncontrollable matters, we shouldn't have expectations; we only need surprises. When we focus too much on the process and execution, we often neglect other things that connect us, like family and health.

The two ends of the balance need to be balanced. When one side is overly invested, it can become a lever that pushes the other side away. A lever can lift one Earth or even two, such as leveraging investments or sacrificing health and family for work. I don't know if it's lucky or unlucky, but when I fall into imbalance, I often receive physiological warnings first, like insomnia. At this point, I realize I need to rebalance.

When we face some hurtful situations, we tend to hide ourselves. For example, if I have a low education level and receive unfair treatment, I may be unwilling to disclose my educational background to others. If I express my emotions and have unpleasant experiences, I may no longer be sincere with others, becoming like an emotionless robot. However, this often leads to another extreme, resulting in further unpleasant outcomes, ultimately leading to self-collapse, which in a sense is also a form of balance.

What we lack, we will talk about. Whether we claim to have or not have something or compare it, it is essentially the same. For instance, I feel my education is inadequate; some think their second-tier degree is not good enough, while others feel their bachelor's degree is inferior to a master's. You will find that once you fall into comparison, it never ends; there will always be someone who has what you don't. The world is inherently unfair.

Some people say that some people's starting point is your endpoint, and you can never surpass them in your lifetime. So why compare yourself to them in this race? Have you heard some elders say they envy you? What you hear more often is, "I've eaten more salt than you've walked roads..."

Many people think they should hide their knowledge as deeply as possible so that fewer people know it and thus have no competition. But information is not a zero-sum game; sharing it doesn't mean losing it. Instead, when you share, the information can mutate, while those unwilling to share may one day be caught off guard.

What you learn, you should teach others; what you earn, you should share. This way, we can achieve balance. Any state of imbalance will eventually force a rebalancing.

Tonight's bowl of chicken soup, if you add some mushrooms, will definitely be delicious enough to make your brain climax.
