These past few days, I read a fascinating book.
The book is called "The Cave Mystery."
It tells a fictional story about a few people who go on a hiking adventure, but unfortunately, they enter a cave that collapses, trapping them inside.
Before they set off, they left a message for their families about where they were going hiking. When they didn't return at the agreed time, their families contacted a rescue team. The rescue operation was very difficult, resulting in the sacrifice of over a dozen rescuers.
The rescuers discovered that they had a calling device on them, and after about 20 days, they managed to contact them. By this time, they had very little food left, and they asked the rescuers if their food could last until the 30th day. The experts said it could not.
Then, one of the individuals inside, A, proposed a plan: if they sacrificed one person by rolling dice, would the remaining people survive without legal issues? The experts did not respond.
Subsequently, the calling device lost power and disconnected. After continuous efforts from the rescuers, they finally managed to get the people out on the thirty-third day, but A was no longer there.
They said A convinced them to agree to roll the dice, but later had a change of heart. Then B helped A roll the dice and asked A if he agreed with its fairness, but A did not respond. In the end, A was chosen by the dice and was killed by the other four.
This incident occurred on the twenty-third day, and the court immediately charged them with murder once they had recovered.
The above is the background of the story. Now, if you were the law enforcer, how would you judge?
There are fifteen viewpoints to prove whether they are guilty.
One viewpoint that argues they are not guilty is that their area at the time was not within the jurisdiction of existing laws, so the law had no authority to impose legal sanctions on them.
The cave's rocks isolated them from modern society, placing them in a primitive situation. Therefore, according to customs, they defined their own set of laws, which was to decide who to sacrifice by rolling dice, and everyone agreed to this law, which became their constitution. In the end, A was just unfortunately chosen; although it was regrettable, they were still not guilty.
So now, do you think they are guilty? Why?
There is a similar dilemma known as the trolley problem. There is a lever that can change the train's track. If the train continues on its current path, it will kill four innocent people. If you pull the lever, it will kill one innocent person. What would you choose?
If you do not pull the lever, could it be considered a crime of failing to save lives? If you pull the lever, would it be considered intentional murder? If you do not pull it, does that mean the lives of four people are worth less than one? If you pull it, why is one life valued more than four?
What if that one person is a wealthy individual, like a tycoon? Or a great philanthropist who has saved many lives? How would you choose then?
In fact, you will find that neither of the two questions above has a so-called correct answer. You might side with the guilty or the not guilty, which reflects your values.
However, in life, we often encounter many different values. Are they wrong? If I do not view the issue from their perspective, how can I ensure that my viewpoint is not merely based on my personal preferences?
At this point, we should consider what our goal is. If the matter does not involve bottom-line and principled issues, can we find a third solution that satisfies everyone, or abandon the notions of right and wrong to find a workable solution? After all, I cannot prove that I am right and you are wrong.
Regardless of whether it's a white cat or a black cat, a cat that catches mice is a good cat.
