It has been over three months since the initiation of this social experiment on Moments. After several attempts to pause, I finally resumed daily updates for 100 days on the first day of the Lunar New Year. Unknowingly, I have written 100 articles (including this one), totaling 205,598 words, which is 205,000 words. During this period, there have been 17,639 reads and 755 shares, averaging about 7 shares per article (which is a bit exciting), with a net increase of 319 followers, which is not an exceptionally outstanding achievement.
Experience of Daily Updates
First, let’s talk about the experience of daily updates. Regardless of the data, it can be considered a small goal achieved, and it has significantly boosted my confidence, after all, doing something for 100 consecutive days is not just a fleeting enthusiasm.
I used to think writing something wasn’t difficult, but I found that writing every day is quite challenging, especially if I don’t input new information on a particular day, I won’t be able to output anything, which makes me particularly anxious. I also worry that the content I write may not be valuable to everyone.
However, this actually falls into a misconception; the quality of the articles is constantly iterating. It’s like writing code; when you look back at the code you wrote last year, you still think it’s terrible. So when you have this feeling, it indicates that you are making progress, which is a good thing.
As for the difficulties, it’s not that hard; it’s not hard to write a little every day, but it is hard to write a little every day. I see many people in Moments writing content day after day, and I particularly admire them, especially Brother Hui, who has been doing daily updates for many years. The biggest difficulty is sitting in front of the computer with a complete blank mind. Whenever this happens, I remind myself, “A prostitute cannot rely solely on lust to attract clients; a writer cannot rely solely on inspiration to write.”
In these past few months, I have written on high-speed trains, on planes, in subways, in cars, and in cafes in Dali, Guangzhou, Kunming, Shenzhen, and Zhengzhou. Especially if the fixed writing time is insufficient, I will find various moments to squeeze in a little writing.
Growth is a very long process. During this time, I have managed to read at least one to two books each month. If I can’t focus on reading, I listen to audiobooks, such as while running or washing dishes. Recently, I have been listening to a book called "The 100-Year Life," which mentions that if our generation does not encounter any accidents, we can basically live to over 95 years old.
Many people feel that by 30, they have already completed a significant portion of their lives and have no opportunity to make mistakes. However, if we consider the standard of living to 95, we have only completed 1/3 of our lives, meaning there is still plenty of time to try the things we want to try.
While everyone may think that 100 days is very long, in our long lives, these 100 days really don’t count for much; even a year doesn’t count for much. So, viewing the problem from this perspective, your decision-making dimension will detach from the present, allowing you to think clearly about what is most important to you.
How to Persist in Daily Updates
In fact, it is indeed very difficult to persist in daily updates just for the sake of daily updates. You need to first consider your purpose for daily updates. My purpose is quite simple: to force myself to absorb more information. However, the process is painful because it contradicts my habits over the years. I generally do not enjoy reading, even though I know reading is very useful; I just find it hard to settle down to read.
Currently, I often do not have a clear understanding of what I plan to write about; to put it bluntly, I have no plan. I have previously tried to record what I see and hear using Flomo and attempted to use the card writing method, but ultimately, I couldn’t run them effectively.
However, one thing that needs to be clarified is that before you write, it’s best to think clearly about the theme and content you want to write about. You can look at other public accounts, books, or chat with friends to determine your writing viewpoints and content, or you can listen to some content from videos. Recently, I have particularly enjoyed interview-style and TED series content.
Additionally, it’s important to develop your own writing habits, just like loading a gun before shooting. For example, how do you get rid of the feeling of not wanting to write before you start? I usually write a tentative title first, then start writing the content, and finally modify the title after finishing.
The rest is just writing; no matter how bad it is, you still have to write because during the writing process, you will have thoughts. This period is one of the few times each day when you can think. I’m referring to most ordinary people like me, who usually think too little; only when writing can you truly settle down to think.
Plans Moving Forward
To be honest, I haven’t thought it through, but what I can confirm is that everything has a beginning and an end; this experiment of daily updates is officially over.
The issues exposed this time are quite obvious, particularly the instability of content quality. I have been unable to produce high-quality content. Although many friends encourage me by saying my writing is good, from the perspective of data and outreach, it is still far from enough.
Therefore, I will take a break for a while, and I expect to have new content updates around June 1. During this time, I will also review this challenge of daily updates thoroughly.
Finally
I would like to thank all the classmates who have followed me. Your feedback allows me to continuously output content. Thank you all very much.
