Recently, I was watching a video by the director, which mentioned several stages of cognition and Charlie Munger's multi-dimensional thinking, and then someone dissed it for being about success studies.

Suddenly, I realized I hadn't heard the term "success studies" in a long time. So, is personal growth also considered success studies?

I believe many of my readers will have an answer.

Success studies focus on benefits, which is success. So how do we define success? It is whether you meet society's definition of success in the eyes of others. To put it bluntly, it could mean becoming a certain big shot, like those with the surname Ma, or big shots in various fields; this is the success of reputation. There is also financial success, such as being a wealthy businessman or millionaire. Additionally, there is success in status, like entering the elite and having many rights.

Success studies often set visual goals, such as making a lot of money, and then create various motivational stories about how someone worked hard and ultimately made a fortune. If you don't earn it, it's because you didn't work hard enough. Then they come up with various methods like shaving your head, walking barefoot on fire, public pledges, etc., to show your determination. It’s about using utilitarianism to drive you and constantly motivating you to reach your goals.

There are also various slogans, like shouting "I want to succeed!" Another aspect is the crowd effect, stimulating adrenaline through the herd mentality to create motivation, explaining the secrets of success through simple reasoning.

For example, success is not simply about repeating one thing; it’s about continuously doing something, reflecting, reviewing, optimizing, and improving. Many big shots have achieved their current success not just because of what you see on the surface, but also due to elements of luck, being in the right place at the right time, or having a well-connected father.

We should reflect on why so many people with a well-connected father haven't become big shots. For instance, with a small goal of one hundred million, we should think about how we judge opportunities and how they think. If an opportunity arises, why don’t we dare to place our bets?

Why did Didi win over Yidao in the end? As a latecomer, why did Didi first enter the ride-hailing market instead of the chauffeur market? Why did Didi surpass Yidao's market share in just three months after entering the chauffeur market? Why did Didi ultimately win over Kuaidi, and why did Uber lose in the end?

The logic behind these questions is the key to success, not just being in the right place at the right time.

Another example is why Alibaba has reached its current scale, with Jack Ma still being the key figure behind the scenes. What is special about the partner mechanism they set up?

When we talk about success studies, we often only see emotions and interests. We fail to recognize that we need to grow; growth is painful and comes at a cost. Progress has methods; learning how to set SOPs, establish foundational frameworks, and build knowledge systems is essential. This is why reading is important, and output is also crucial. We need to cultivate altruistic thinking, establish multi-dimensional thinking, learn to think independently, and regularly review and learn, among other things.

What we should pursue is growth, not just success. Blindly chasing success will ultimately lead to being manipulated.
