"The Power of Words is What Moves People the Most"

For a poor student like me, the only thing I feel fortunate about is writing. This is also the only part where I had the chance to be praised by teachers during my school days; most of the time, I was standing outside the classroom as punishment.

I remember I used to write novels or something similar. If I hadn’t been so into gaming and had to study how to write cheats, I might have become a reclusive novelist by now.

Writing code and writing are similar; both involve creating text, except one is meant for machines to understand, while the other is for people. Many times, some people live like machines, or even worse than machines, as machines know how to freeze at 100% CPU usage and then restart. Yet many people remain stuck…

Words are a very special thing. Often, what’s in your mind and what you say are completely different. When we speak, we may not express what we intended, but instead convey a different meaning, sometimes hurting ourselves and at other times hurting others. However, we can think deeply and then express ourselves better through words.

Recently, I came across an article recommending "A Short History of Information," which piqued my interest, so I read it and found it really fascinating.

Physicist John Archibald Wheeler summarized it with a prophetic sentence made up of monosyllabic words: "It from Bit." "Everything—any particle, any force field, even spacetime itself—originates from information." Even our bodies are massive information processors.

DNA, as a typical representative of information molecules, is the most advanced information processor at the cellular level, defining a person with 6 billion bits of information. All reality is formed in our minds after a series of "yes" and "no" inquiries and analyses. Computers also form through "yes" and "no," which is 1 and 0.

One of the carriers of information is text.

Without the existence of text, you wouldn’t be able to read this article. Thanks to the emergence of text, we can see distant historical records, and we can convey text to many people, just as I can convey it to you, the reader. The deceased can communicate with us through text, and we can pass information to our yet-to-be-born descendants; the emergence of text has changed the world.

There’s a passage that deeply resonated with me, explaining the difference between spoken language and text:

Chinese characters have become the richest and most complex writing system in human history. Chinese characters unified various spoken groups, allowing them to communicate through text. Another extreme is the "alphabet," which is the most simplified and disruptive element among all writing systems.

In all languages on Earth, the term "alphabet" is the same: alphabet. If anyone knows which company has this name, please reply with 【alphabet】, and I will tell you who it is.

In ancient times, whoever mastered writing held the power over law and rituals.

I input through text and output through text. Text connects us and allows me to see my gradual growth; my growth is inseparable from recording and reviewing.
