Recently, I've had quite a few people add me, but many of them add me without saying anything. I actually don't understand the purpose of adding me, but since most people add me hoping to connect with this bald uncle, I generally accept their requests.
As the number of people on WeChat increases, I've developed a habit of indexing some information about the other person and writing it in the notes, such as where I met them, when, and some personal introductions about them. Otherwise, I really can't remember where this person came from, and I also have severe face blindness; I often need to meet someone multiple times before I can remember them.
So, what should a self-introduction include?
What is your name?
Many people like to use various nicknames; for example, some prefer English names, while others like to write some IDs. However, it often leads to awkward situations where some words are mispronounced or not pronounced at all, resulting in high explanation costs. Then, they choose a Chinese nickname, which turns out to be difficult to verbalize, leading to further simplification and causing another mess.
For example, many people know that I have an English name, Sanvi, but I don't use it much because it's hard to pronounce. As a result, people started calling me "salmon," and it later got simplified to "Little San" or "San Ge."
These simplifications always sound a bit strange...
Later, because I started posting content online, to eliminate the explanation costs between public and private domains, I decided to consistently use my real name.
Of course, some people say that the internet is so complicated, and using a real name might not be good. But think about it: if you're not famous, whether you use a real name or a pseudonym, no one will pay attention to you. Once you become famous, it doesn't matter whether you use a real name or a pseudonym. Otherwise, when people see certain reports, "xxxx, real name: xxxxxx," if it needs to be exposed, it will be exposed. It's better to be straightforward in your actions...
Moreover, in today's internet, what privacy is there to speak of? I once saw someone mention a very influential figure on YouTube, Zhong Xitong. Ever since I carelessly searched for them, the recommendations on YouTube changed dramatically...
What do you do?
You need to clearly explain what you do. Before introducing yourself, it's best to give yourself a recognizable label. For example, I see many people label themselves as "XX Coach" or "Marketing Consultant." I'm still exploring a suitable label for myself.
Then, briefly introduce your professional experience. For instance, I come from a development background, have worked in development for over a decade, have also been a product manager, started my own business, and have served as a technical lead in various companies of different sizes.
Next, you can list some of the things you've done. For example, someone in operations might write about how many precise users they attracted in a few months and how much revenue they generated. A technical person might mention the user scale or concurrency scale of the systems they were responsible for. For instance, I might say that I was responsible for a system with a million-user scale.
It doesn't have to be limited to work. For example, if you operate a public account, video account, Douyin, blog, or other self-media platforms, you can also help others better understand who you are.
How can I help you?
Now that I know who you are and how impressive you are, it seems like this has nothing to do with me, right?
You can understand what your product is. Many people have rich industry experience, and their industry experience can provide consulting services in that area. Or you might have resources in that industry, such as advertising channels on certain platforms, relevant connections, or sharing industry experiences.
In summary, you need to explain your value to the other party. Of course, this title can also be viewed from another angle as your request. For example, if I just want to observe and learn from your Moments, at least the other party knows what your purpose is. Otherwise, an unknown person might directly block your Moments and set it to allow only chatting.
Finally,
Being proactive is certainly a good thing, but when the other party is not interested in you, don't force a connection. For instance, I recently saw a guy aggressively trying to connect with a girl and ended up being exposed on Moments. After the other party saw it, they continued to ignore him, resulting in a series of harsh comments—a large-scale social death scene...
